Ok.... So, the science content text can be extremely boring, especially if you're not interested in science whatsoever. For a lot of students, science courses are just something they have to do. I always thought that textbooks were all we had, and that is what you teach, but there are other options! I think students will appreciate having options so much more than being forced to always consult their text.
In grade school I disliked (and still dislike) textbooks. I have yet to read one that didn't stress my eyes with small text. The chapters are so wordy, and it is hard to read and comprehend concepts when you have not been introduced to the contextual language. I recently watched a video from The Teaching Channel (see link below) that covered simplifying text complexity. Students need to be able to understand what they read. I think that the subject videos on Khan Academy would act as a great supplement to any lesson and better drive student understanding. What a great point! There aren't many textbooks that I have liked. I still don't use the textbook assigned to my classroom. I have found that kids like (and understand) short spurts of information. Keep looking for resources and other tools!
