New teacher blues...
Breaking down vocabulary in lessons can be tedious. Sometimes students come in the classroom with issues in understanding the technical language and discourse of the content. I know they are in Biology or Life Science. I'm having issues connecting prior knowledge to help them with new content. Overall, I was needing to know how to handle a situation when there is no prior knowledge without spending a whole lessons only on background information, especially since there are pacing guides to abide by. I am still working on building the necessary skills needed to be an effective educator. So, some things will come with more time and experience. While doing some research on discourse in my content, I came across this fabulous video that discusses academic discourse. In the video, a teacher helped refine the understanding of scientific concepts through small group and whole group discussions. Click the word video (above) to see awesome examples of class discussions!
