New teacher blues...
Breaking down vocabulary in lessons can be tedious. Sometimes students come in the classroom with issues in understanding the technical language and discourse of the content. I know they are in Biology or Life Science. I'm having issues connecting prior knowledge to help them with new content. Overall, I was needing to know how to handle a situation when there is no prior knowledge without spending a whole lessons only on background information, especially since there are pacing guides to abide by. I am still working on building the necessary skills needed to be an effective educator. So, some things will come with more time and experience. While doing some research on discourse in my content, I came across this fabulous video that discusses academic discourse. In the video, a teacher helped refine the understanding of scientific concepts through small group and whole group discussions. Click the word video (above) to see awesome examples of class discussions!

I enjoyed reading your blog. I love your honesty as a new teacher. Even though you were faced with a problem you continued to search for answers without giving up. I think even as we become seasoned teachers, we will still face challenges of reaching our students. We must never give up and continue searching for ways to reach them. Keep up the hard work .

I know exactly how you feel, because it is hard for me at times to connect prior knowledge to what I am teaching. It is especially hard when I am teaching a concept that they have never heard of. I try my best to connect it to something that my students are familiar with, but I also have come to the understanding that you cannot always connect a concept to something that they can relate to and there is nothing wrong with that.
